Eid Mubarak

According to Islam, even a smile is a form of charity (sadaqa). ...

Akbar, ALLAHu Akbar, ALLAHu Akbar, La Ilaha Illal-lah, WALLAHu Akbar, ALLAHu Akbra Wa Lillahil-hamd.

As Eid-ul-Adha and the Hajj season approach, IFANCA wishes everyone Eid Mubarak. May ALLAH, Subhanahu wa ta'ala, shower HIS Mercy and Blessings upon us all.

Eid Mubarak, Akbar, ALLAHu Akbar, ALLAHu Akbar, La Ilaha Illal-lah, WALLAHu Akbar, ALLAHu Akbra Wa Lillahil-hamd...

Eid-ul-Adha is a four-day holiday and celebration. It commences on the 10th day of Thul Hijjah, the 12th month in the Hijra calendar and is celebrated with a special holiday prayer, performed in congregation in the Masjid (Mosque) or other suitable place. It is a time of celebration, of visiting family and friends and of thanking ALLAH, Subhanahu wa ta'ala, for all the blessings bestowed upon us. For those blessed with performing Hajj this year, may your efforts be accepted and may ALLAH, Subhanahu wa ta'ala, grant you an abode in Paradise. We wish you a safe journey back home.

And as the new Hijra year (1431) approaches, we wish you all a Happy New Year.

We also wish everyone a peaceful and blessed holiday season and peace and prosperity in the year to come. For more information on Eid-ul-Adha and Islam, click on these links: Eid-ul-Adha / Islam end of article

In 1989, opportunity came knocking on the Vandenberg farmhouse door – quite literally. Although the previous owners had shut down their small goat cheese business before they sold the property, aficionados continued to turn up on the doorstep looking for a fix of the tart and creamy cheese.

Neither Bruce Vandenberg nor his wife Sharon (pictured left) had ever raised a goat, but they decided to launch a small on-farm business. A little market research convinced them to go ahead. They bought a small herd of goats, and Mariposa Dairy was born.

Mariposa Dairy produces spreadable Halal certified goat cheeses in a variety of flavors, including:

  • Blueberry
  • Cranberry
  • Fig
  • Herb & Garlic
  • Dill Plain
Over the past few years, some of their customers wanted HACCP certification, an internationally recognized standard for food safety. HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) is a science-based system that identifies critical points in the production process where physical, chemical or biological hazards are most likely to occur and then takes steps to reduce or eliminate them.

The Vandenbergs turned to the Advantage HACCP program designed by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs for small and mid-sized enterprises. And because they were in the process of setting up a bigger facility for the burgeoning business, they were able to design it with HACCP in mind. Mariposa Dairy Ltd. obtained IFANCA Halal certification in January 2008. Their Halal certified products can be found in major grocery stores with the Crescent M® Halal logo.

For more information, please contact Mariposa Dairy Ltd. by email at mariposadairy@hotmail.com.

And please visit www.ifanca.org/products/index.php?catId=42 for a complete listing of halal-certified cheeses under Mariposa Dairy and Finica Food Specialties (an authorized distributor of Mariposa's Celebrity brand).

Disproportionate Growth With Halal Food In Germany, Reported By Businessweek, October 2009

Last month's big news pertained to France airing its first ever halal-food ad. ... According to a Business Week report "Germany Wakes Up to Halal Muslim Food", the halal trend is unstoppable. The article quotes Peter Grothues, head of the food industry segment of Cologne's trade fair company who hosted an exhibition in October for more than 800 halal food producers, most of whom supply to Turkish corner shops in German cities. "But halal is becoming an increasingly important pillar of the trade", says the Federal Association of German Food Retailers. Local businesses too have realized the worth of halal. The Meemken family produces almost 100 tons a week of a variety of sausage that follows Islamic food standards, supplying to food retailers in Germany and abroad. "We're definitely going to expand this segment", says managing director Rolf Meemken. "We're registering disproportionately strong growth with halal."

The exponential increase in the knowledge of the functioning of the human body at the level has lead to an increased interest in the foods we eat and their effects on our body. There appears to be a growing desire to control and play a greater role by individuals in their health and well-being rather than to be a passive player. There has been a shift in concept of nutrition to avoid the development of deficiencies to that of prevention or treatment of chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, which have become the major killers in the place of infectious diseases. This shift has lead to an increased and sustained effort to increase the knowledge of nutrition in prevention of disease and overall wellness and health.

Carotenoids are the red, orange, and yellow pigments synthesized by plants and their presence gives color to the plant fruit, root, leaves, etc. About 600 carotenoids have been isolated from various sources and their chemical structure identified. About 10% of these pigments have vitamin A activity. Lycopene is a red color carotenoid found in tomatoes, a red-orange pigment or carotenoid "canthaxanthin" is found in plants and seafood like trout and crustaceans. Carotenoids are also present in carrots, squash, lettuce, peppers, pumpkins, papayas, apricots, peaches, nectarines, and oranges. Green vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, spinach, and peas also have carotenoids.

Vitamin A is produced from beta-carotene, a carotenoid. Vitamin A is considered essential for vision, immune function and for prevention of retarded growth and night blindness. Diets rich in carotenoids are linked with a decreased risk of degenerative eye diseases such as macular degeneration and cataracts. Carotenoids have been associated with a decreased risk of cancer, protection against skin and lung cancer and heart disease. end of article
